At Orton Academy, we understand the emotional journey parents face when searching for a school that truly supports neurodivergent learners, including those with dyslexia and other reading or learning differences. Too often, families encounter a system that lacks the training, resources, or understanding needed to help their child thrive. This lack of support can be frustrating, exhausting, and deeply disheartening.
For many families, the path to finding the right educational fit is filled with stress and uncertainty. One parent shared how homeschooling seemed like the best option at first—but the absence of structured support, paired with ongoing battles with the school system, quickly became overwhelming.
Another family recognized early signs of reading difficulty and pursued a private assessment—an expensive and emotional process. Despite clear indicators, their school’s special education team lacked the knowledge to identify dyslexia and missed the opportunity to address the real issue.
Yet another parent began asking questions after a kindergarten teacher noted something wasn’t quite right. When the pandemic shifted learning online, the gaps widened. It wasn’t until years later that their child was finally diagnosed with dyslexia—yet even then, meaningful school support never followed.
These stories are not unique. Families of neurodivergent learners often face long, difficult roads filled with unanswered questions and unmet needs.
