All students experience a slight regression of skills between the end of one academic year and the beginning of the next.
Here are some tips to minimize the summer slide and prepare students to get back on track quickly in the fall:
READ, READ, READ
- Take turns reading aloud with your student, pausing frequently to discuss what was read. Help students develop their love of reading. Children of all ages, including teens, can benefit from hearing books read aloud.
- Find something to read every day. Encourage kids to read books, graphic novels, environmental print, online resources while playing on the computer.
- Find things your kids want to read. Ask the librarian at your local library for recommendations based on your child’s age, reading ability, or interests. Kids who like what they are reading are sure to read more.
- Use free or school-provided resources such as MyOn, Freckle,
Readworks, Storyline Online
PRACTICE MATH FACTS
- Encourage students to practice their math skills through online math games such as Mr. Nussbaum’s Math Games, Prodigy or Zearn
- Watch math videos on Embarc Online or Kahn Academy
DAILY WRITING
- Encourage students to write in a journal daily to record their
summer activities. - Download madlibs as a framework for students to create a silly story.
- Write letters to a friend.
BUILD VOCABULARY
- Play vocabulary games such as freerice.com to increase exposure to new words
